It has been over four years since gamers had a new Simpsons console title to play, but that’s changing next week when The Simpsons Arcade Game launches on the PlayStation Network.

PlayStation Plus subscribers get the first crack at The Simpsons Arcade Game.

Today, Sony announced that The Simpsons Arcade Game will launch on the PSN on February 7 as a free game download for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Sony did not note if the game will be made available to non-PlayStation Plus users.

An HD overhaul of the 1991 original beat-’em-up title, the game lets players control Homer, Marge, Lisa, and Bart, and pummel foes through a series of side-scrolling levels. Four-player online co-op has also been confirmed for the game.

The game was first teased in November, when a listing with the Australian government pegged the title for a multiplatform release. Presently, the game has been announced only for the PSN.

Electronic Arts released an iOS version of The Simpsons Arcade Game in 2009, but the most recent console Simpsons title was The Simpsons Game, which was released in 2007 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, DS, PlayStation 2, and PSP.

Team Bondi may have shut down following the release of L.A. Noire last May, but that doesn’t mean its one and only intellectual property will be following the studio to the grave. As part of its larger Asked & Answered feature today, Rockstar Games said that gamers shouldn’t “count out the possibility of a new game in the L.A. Noire franchise in the future.”

Will Cole Phelps ever have new cases to solve?

“We’re all very pleased with how that game turned out and are considering what the future may hold for L.A. Noire as a series,” reads a message from Rockstar. “We don’t always rush to make sequels, but that does not mean we won’t get to them eventually–see Max and Red Dead for evidence of that. We have so many games we want to make and the issue is always one of bandwidth and timing.”

Rockstar also confirmed that no additional downloadable content for L.A. Noire will be developed. The studio said it is “all too busy” working on Max Payne 3, Grand Theft Auto V, and “other games.”

Team Bondi shut down amid a flurry of controversy, after accusations of hostile working conditions prompted the International Game Developers Association to launch an investigation into the developer. Additionally, when the shop closed, it reportedly was $1.4 million in debt. The studio’s assets, including its next project, Whore of the Orient, were acquired by film production company Kennedy Miller Mitchell.

Alan Wake developer Remedy has more in store for its psychological thriller series beyond next week’s Alan Wake’s American Nightmare. Speaking with gaming blog Joystiq, Remedy CEO Matias Myllyrinne said plans for a new game in the franchise are already “in motion.”

The author hero’s journey isn’t over just yet.

The developer said its main focus presently is finishing Alan Wake’s American Nightmare and releasing it later this month, but the company is also looking to its future.

“It’s too early to talk about what our next move is, but we’ve obviously put things into motion,” he said. “We’re crowd pleasers, we’ll do what the audience wants, ’cause usually that’s the good business move as well.”

Myllyrinne also dropped a hint that the studio’s next title will be released digitally, as opposed to on-disc at retail.

“I’m loving the digital [distribution] side and we’ll see how that evolves, but just being able to give people quick access to bite-size chunks of gaming is maybe more fun than working for years and years,” he said.

Even though most Battlefield 3 players are still learning the ins and outs of the game’s multiplayer maps, EA is already prepping a four-map downloadable update scheduled for release next month. The map pack is called Back to Karkand and features a number of classic Battlefield maps, as well as a new mode called Conquest Assault. This mode is sort of a combination of Conquest and Rush, putting a team of defenders against a team of attackers as they all fight over three different flag-capture points. The twist is that the attackers start with fewer respawns, while the defenders have no spawn base; they can only squad spawn or spawn on successfully defended flags. So what’s the deal with those “new” maps? Well, here’s a breakdown of the two we got a chance to play:

Strike at Karkand

If this map sounds familiar, there’s a reason: It’s a remake of the fan-favorite Battlefield 2 map of the same name. This one takes place in a Middle Eastern city that’s visually similar to the Battlefield 3 campaign levels set in Tehran. The density of buildings makes it a great map to pick off opponents from the rooftops, but there are more than a few tanks that can literally take the ground out from under you at a moment’s notice. Here are a few gameplay videos:

Gulf of Oman

Gulf of Oman is another remake of a classic Battlefield 2 map and is a more wide-open map than Strike at Karkand. There are wide stretches of road, freeway, and hills that make you an easy target for snipers if you don’t have a vehicle handy. Be sure to keep an eye out for snipers perched atop the towering construction cranes that dominate the skyline. It’ll be interesting to see if DICE keeps these sniper perches accessible via ladders because it removed a similar sniper spot on the Caspian Border map after the public beta. Back to Karkand is scheduled for release in December. If you preordered the limited edition, you’ve already got access to the map pack. Everyone else will have to fork over $15.

One could conclude that a new entry in the SoulCalibur series would garner huge numbers on its debut week in Japan. After all, SoulCalibur IV sold 74,607 copies on the PlayStation 3 in its first week. However, last week’s numbers on the recent Media Creates sales chart update could be a shock for Namco Bandai and may require the company to reconsider its stance on the franchise.

The soul isn’t burning as brightly as it should be in Japan.

SoulCalibur V for the PS3 debuted at second place with 43,500 units sold, while the Xbox 360 version was at 16th place with 7,679 units sold. Recent reviews praised the 3D fighting game for its visuals and new fighting mechanics but criticized it for its lack of basic teaching tools and sparse offline modes. On the flip side, Namco Bandai’s mecha title, Armored Core V for the PS3, was still hanging within the top five spot. The game sold 30,775 units in its second week. The latest Tales title from the publisher, Tales of Innocence R, dropped from third to 14th place for the week with 8,397 units sold.

Resident Evil: Revelations was the top earner of the week; the survival horror title sold 43,575 units. Other 3DS titles still within the top 10 were Mario Kart 7 at sixth place with 26,791 units sold, Monster Hunter 3G at seventh place with 24,128 units sold, and Super Mario 3D Land at eighth place with 22,817 units sold.

The week of January 30 also saw the debut of a new PlayStation Vita title: the action role-playing game Ragnarok Odyssey. The game debuted at fourth place with 33,496 units sold. The game is billed as a “hunting action” title in the vein of Capcom’s Monster Hunter, complete with four-player co-op mode via ad hoc. The title is developed by Game Arts, a company renowned for creating the Lunar and Grandia series.

Dating sim PhotoKano by publisher Kadokawa also debuted pretty high on the charts, sitting at third place with 34,095 units sold. The PSP title pits players in a high-school setting as they mingle and romance girls by playing around with the biorhythm-matching game mechanic. Players can take pictures of girls in various poses and backdrops as a reward.

Other surprises included Dragon Age II, the RPG from BioWare that was released last year. The game was distributed by Spike recently and debuted at 10th place in Japan with 19,928 units sold.

The 3DS was still staying strong, with 75,018 units sold possibly due to Capcom’s survival horror title and the system’s main titles still within the top 10 of the charts. The PS3 and PS Vita were just trailing behind, with the former selling 23,293 units and the latter selling 17,141 units for the week.
